NEWS FROM THE CLASSROOM

Through Their Eyes

News from the 2nd Grade classroom

April 7, 2018
One of my favorite writing units each year is the poetry unit.  I love how students at this age say what they’re thinking and I love looking at the world through their eyes.  Every year, I am amazed at what these young poets come up with and grateful that I get a peek into their incredible imaginations.  It’s a fresh and very welcome way of looking at things.

Below are the rough drafts of a few poems that were written this week.  Each student will be completing their own anthology of poetry to bring home soon, each with varying styles of poems they’ve written.

Pink and red are
the colors of love,
hearts
our brain and
sometimes greatness.
– AL

Swim, Swim, Through water.
Water, Water, Over earth.
Swim, Swim, Over earth.
– BH

The colors are bright
the sun is shining
and the roads are clean.

It’s spring! – CG.

Fluffy little dog
Why are you staring at me
Do not look at me
– ED

Gold is the ninjas at night
in the darkness
while I am sleeping. – FA

The students are also learning how to give positive feedback and constructive criticism to their fellow writers, in addition to the normal collaboration that occurs during writing workshop.

The classroom is alive with the sounds of “What would be a good word that means cute but is not cute?” or “I need a two syllable word that has something to do with water.”  or “Does this sound right to you?  I’m trying to write about my dog.”  or “You might want to choose a different word here because you’ve used it four times already.”

Stay tuned for more poetry coming your way next week as the students venture into writing their “I Am…” and shape poems.
