News from the Kindergarten classroom

October 3, 2021

When entering our Kindergarten classroom, the first thing you will notice is the absence of the traditional desk and chair layout. Instead, you will find several open areas with an array of seating options for the students to choose from.

Students can choose to sit on a wiggle stool or in a scoop chair…

Kneel at the table or sit on the bean bag chair…

Lay on the floor or sit in our “Hug” chair.

Classroom design has a significant impact on students’ educational achievement. Our goal as teachers is to create a supportive learning environment for ALL students. Flexible seating does just that and more! It allows students to sit where they feel most comfortable, giving them a sense of ownership over their education. This helps the students to build key social-emotional characteristics such as self esteem and self confidence. It also provides an opportunity for them to personally explore how they learn best.

This classroom arrangement also creates a flow that encourages peer collaboration. With the open space, students are given adequate room to explore and express their creativity. This is evident when you walk into the classroom and see our students teaming up to build various creations out of pattern blocks.

This flexible learning environment fosters collaboration, creativity and confidence, which encourages students to become independent thinkers.  The development of these 21st century skills are essential to their success as they embark on their educational journey.
