This week we have been practicing our understanding of the 21st Century Skills that we are trying to exemplify and grow from this year.
In the math and literacy centers, our class has been continuing to display effective communication and collaboration when playing competitive/skill games. During the activity “Drop the Beans” in math, the kids were taking turns making different combinations of 7, 8, 9 and 10. Throughout each turn, everyone worked together to decipher where they should record the equation to match the combination tossed. It became a team game, instead of everyone “against” each other. I am so proud of the kids for taking on a collaborative and positive energy, during such a normally competitive activity.
Word Tower went the same way. After students chose a block to remove, they could read 1-5 words for varying amounts of points. Without prompting, students again were helping each other read and record the words so everyone could gain points.
In each of these activities they also demonstrated critical thinking their skills. Deciding where to write the equation and what blocks to pull so that the structure wouldn’t fall.
It was a fantastic week learning more about each other while improving on our academic skills and concepts. Having snow on the ground was an awesome bonus that made for a creative time during free play at recess! Have a great weekend!
