News from the 3rd Grade classroom

April 13, 2018
Third graders were asked to choose a rock and told to make it their own by drawing a happy face. That rock was to remind them that they can always choose to be happy.  Then, the book, Ishi, was read to students and parents. Ishi is a rock but it is also a symbol of mindfulness, happiness and kindness. In the book, Ishi gives simple tips that put a positive spin on those moments when we are feeling down and out or when things just aren’t going our way. The purpose of this activity is to promote mindfulness and growth mindset. It is a great opportunity for parents to see how PNA students are taught social emotional skills.

Before the school year started, parents were asked to write their hopes and dreams on a rock. These rocks were on display as a focal point in the classroom. Now, that it is almost the end of the year, parents were handed back this rock and were asked to reflect on the school year with their child. Have their reached their goals? What did they like most about third third? What could have been changed? What are they most proud of? Reflection writing has been a consistent part of learning in third grade that students were able to reflect on their year without a lot of help from parents.

“Making the rock, making the claw (arcade project) and learning division. I would change nothing,”

“My favorite field trip was the arcade field trip. I liked Mrs. Orbase and the arcade project. I would change nothing. I am proud of going to student council.”

”I liked the projects but I dislike homework. I improved on spelling. I’m proud of the arcade. I have a better attitude.”

“I wish there’s less math homework and I can focus better. I liked the plant project, arcade, and presentations.”
“I learned “Be kind. Every one is facing a battle you know nothing about.” So I need to be kind to every one. For the last 79 days, I’ll work on cursive. I’m proud of learning cursive.”
“Practice math to make me better. I’ll work hard. I liked third grade because we do fun stuff like going to the weather station.”
