Self Esteem and our youngest learners

News from the Preschool classroom

December 18, 2021

I have noticed over the past few weeks that the Otters have hit their stride with self esteem and confidence. It has been a gradual shift but noticeable non the less .  It is not a quick task to build children’s self esteem in the classroom but it is one of the most important and it is something that we foster from the beginning. When children feel confident and secure, they’re more likely to succeed in school and achieve personal goals. As they get older, they learn to confront problems and resist peer pressure. More important, having a positive self-image helps a child feel happy and capable of maintaining personal relationships.

When we foster self esteem students feel comfortable and confident in their environment. When kids are confident and secure about who they are, they’re more likely to have growth mind set. That means they can motivate themselves to take on new challenges and cope with and learn from mistakes. They are more likely to stand up for themselves and ask for help when they need it. To foster positive self esteem we work to build a solid relationship. We help each student tackle a task until they are satisfied with the completion. We encourage each student to have a voice to stand up for themselves. We talk through mistakes and how to correct it if necessary. With these tools the Otters have grown confident in themselves and are thriving in their learning environment and very comfortable in calling me out when I make a mistake and furthermore very helpful in correcting said mistakes. The future is bright in the Otters classroom.
