In our Beginners class recently, we worked with the concepts of how arranging numbers make a composition. We viewed Mark Tobey, Northwest Painter, and discussed how he approached his compositions, and compared and contrasted his technique with Jackson Pollock, American painter who used unique techniques. Using paint pens, we overlaid previous work done in color on our small canvases. We also discussed conceptual art.

Today, we drew small oranges, and then peeled them to see what was inside. We used paint pens on contrasting paper to delineate the forms made by the orange peel as it was taken off the center. We also enjoyed discussing the smell, taste, and feel of the small oranges as we covered the paper with drawings.

The Kindergarten class finished their self-portraits, where we had focused on chiaroscuro, and now also their Iditarod dog paintings.

Our classes are working on painting, with alternate classes for some being weaving. An auction project was completed and now we are finishing another.

After the Auction, students and I plan to go on field trips to art places, such as the Georgia Blue Gallery.

Note about the Artist-Teacher, Brenda Jaeger: I’ve been part of a number of group shows.. It’s been fun. I’m working on several series: The Guitar Series, the Swimmer Series, the Lightning Series, the Finger Lake/Matanuska River Series, and others. I brushed up on my woodcarving skills through a class at the Woodworkers Association. I’m working on my reading about the landscape, so that I may be more observant outdoors when painting.
